Care & maintenance

Glass and steel are easy. Rosewood is particular.

  • Glass carafe: Rinse immediately after each brew or the oils film the inside. Warm soapy water, soft brush, rinse. Dishwasher-safe if you skip the wood lid.
  • Rosewood lid: Hand wash only. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, dry immediately. Once every few months, rub a drop of food-grade mineral oil to keep the wood from drying and cracking.
  • Filter screen: Disassemble after every few brews, rinse under hot water. Coffee oils clog the mesh over time, a soft brush or a baking soda soak clears it.
  • Double-wall care: The air gap is sealed, no water gets between the walls. If it fogs or moisture appears inside, the seal is broken and the carafe should be replaced.

Frequently asked

How much longer does the double-wall keep coffee warm?

About 15–20 minutes longer than single-wall glass. The air gap slows heat transfer.

How many cups does the 20 oz Walnut Glass Press make compared with the 12 oz?

Three to four cups, versus about two. The 20 oz (600 ml) stands 7.7 in tall and the 12 oz (350 ml) 6.7 in, with the same double-wall glass and rosewood lid.

Can I put the rosewood lid in the dishwasher?

No. High heat and detergent dry out the wood and crack the finish. Hand wash the lid with a damp cloth, dry it immediately, and it will last years.

Does the Walnut Glass Press have a walnut lid?

No. Despite the name, the lid is rosewood. The carafe is double-wall heat-resistant glass and the plunger screen is stainless steel mesh.

How long should I steep?

Four minutes is standard. Light roasts can go four and a half, dark roasts three and a half. Steeping longer extracts more bitterness without adding flavor.

Can the glass carafe and plunger go in the dishwasher?

Yes, the glass and the steel can. Keep the rosewood lid out and wash it by hand.

Glass vs stainless steel French press: which should I get?

Glass lets you watch the brew and does not hold flavors, and this double-wall carafe keeps coffee warm about 15 to 20 minutes longer than single-wall glass. A double-wall steel press holds heat longer and cannot break, so it suits travel or a busy kitchen better.

Can I use it for loose-leaf tea?

Yes. Any French press can steep loose-leaf tea: add the leaves, pour hot water, wait the steep time for your tea, then press to hold the leaves down. Rinse the mesh well afterward so the tea does not flavor your next coffee.
