Care & maintenance
Ceramic is forgiving, but handmade ceramic shows its history. Treat it gently.
- Hand wash: Warm water, soft sponge, mild soap. The marbled glaze can dull in a dishwasher over time, and the unglazed base can stain from detergent residue.
- Microwave with care: The ceramic heats quickly. Use a cloth or towel when removing, the mug gets hot faster than the coffee inside.
- Staining: Unglazed ceramic absorbs tannins from coffee and tea. A light stain is normal and part of the patina. For deep cleaning, soak in a paste of baking soda and water for 15 minutes, then scrub gently.
- Avoid thermal shock: Do not pour boiling water into a cold mug straight from the fridge. Preheat with warm water first, or let the mug come to room temperature.
Frequently asked
How much does it hold?
7 oz, about the size of a cappuccino or a short Americano. Not a travel mug, but the right size for a slow morning ritual at the table.
Which glaze should I pick?
Off-white with brown swirls is neutral and warm, works with any counter or table. Pale green is subtle and calm, pairs well with wood. Terracotta is earthy and bold, makes a statement on a light shelf.
What does "handmade" mean here?
Each mug is wheel-thrown by hand, not molded in a factory. The marbled glaze is applied manually, and the firing process creates unique variations in color and pattern.
Why is the base unglazed?
Leaving the base unglazed is a Japanese tradition, it shows the raw clay and prevents the mug from sticking to the kiln shelf during firing. It also gives the mug a slight grip on the table, reducing slipping.
Can I use it for tea?
Yes. The 7 oz size works for both coffee and tea. The unglazed base will absorb tannins over time, which is normal and considered part of the mug's aging process.
