The pot cools before you do

You pour the first cup, the conversation runs long, and by the time you reach for the pot the tea inside has already gone tepid.

Thin teaware sheds its warmth the moment it leaves the heat, so the last cup is never as good as the first. The Tetsuki is a Japanese tetsubin, solid cast iron with the mass to brew on a direct flame and then hold that heat at the table long after the stove is off. Set it down on the gas or electric burner, then carry it to where you are sitting and let the iron do the rest. Your last cup stays as hot as the moment you poured it, and the pot darkens a little with every use.

Iron remembers heat. Plastic forgets it.

Care & maintenance

Cast iron rewards patience. Season it lightly, dry it completely, and it will outlast most kitchen companions.

  • Rinse only: Warm water and a soft brush. No soap, it strips the seasoning and leaves a residue that leaches into the next brew.
  • Dry immediately: Towel-dry the body, then place it on low heat for 2–3 minutes to evaporate any trapped moisture. Cast iron rusts if left wet.
  • Season lightly: Once a month, rub the interior with a drop of neutral oil (grapeseed, sunflower) while the pot is still warm. Wipe away the excess. This builds a protective layer.
  • Handle care: The jute wrapping is natural fiber and will darken with use. If it frays, unwrap and replace with new jute twine, hardware stores carry it.

Frequently asked

Can I heat this directly on the stove?

Yes. This is a true tetsubin-style teapot, designed for direct heat. Boil water in it, steep tea leaves in it, or preheat it before adding brewed tea.

Does it come with an infuser?

No. You can drop loose leaves directly into the pot (traditional method), or use a separate basket infuser. The wide spout pours clean, but a small mesh strainer at the cup helps catch stray leaves.

How much tea does it brew?

27 oz, about three and a half standard mugs, or five small tea cups. It is sized for a quiet afternoon, not a dinner party.

Why no soap?

Cast iron is porous. Soap seeps into the surface and lingers, altering the taste of the next brew. A firm rinse with warm water and a soft brush removes tannins and oils without stripping the protective seasoning layer.

Can I use it on induction?

No. The painted finish and jute wrapping are not compatible with induction cooktops. Use gas or electric stovetops only.
