The old shape, simplified. A wood box, a copper-toned hopper, a drawer that fills with fresh coffee. No electricity, no learning curve, no noise.

The Bottega Pine Grinder is a vintage-style manual coffee grinder built around a square pine wood base, a cast iron body, and ceramic conical burrs. A bronze-finish metal hopper holds the beans, a side-mounted crank with a turned wooden knob does the work, and a pull-out drawer catches the grounds underneath. Grind adjusts from coarse to fine with a single nut. It is the kind of object that earns a permanent spot on the counter.

The drawer keeps the grounds. You keep the rest.

Why people keep it on the counter

  • Ceramic burrs, not blades: Conical ceramic burrs crush the beans evenly instead of chopping them, for a more consistent grind and cleaner cup. Ceramic stays cool and will not transfer metallic taste.
  • Grind exactly where you want it: One adjusting nut takes you from coarse French press to fine moka, dialed in by feel in small turns.
  • Silent and cordless: No motor, no plug, no whirring at 6am. Just a steady crank and the smell of fresh grounds.
  • The drawer does the catching: Ground coffee falls straight into a pull-out wooden drawer. Slide it out, tip it into your brewer, slide it back.
  • Built to sit out, not hide away: Real pine, cast iron, and a bronze-toned hopper with a small CAFE plate. It looks like an heirloom, not an appliance.

Care & maintenance

Coffee oils accumulate on burrs and in the drawer. Clean after every few uses to keep the grind fresh.

  • Brush the burrs: Use a small brush to sweep out old grounds and trapped oils. Coffee beans release oils during grinding, which stale quickly and taint the next batch.
  • Wipe the drawer: Damp cloth, dry immediately. The drawer collects fine dust and oils that build up over time.
  • No soap on burrs: Water and a brush are enough. Soap residue is hard to rinse fully and ends up in the next cup.
  • Wood care: Wipe the pine base with a barely damp cloth. Once or twice a year, rub a drop of food-grade mineral oil to keep the wood from drying or cracking.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to grind enough for one cup?

Around 60 to 90 seconds of steady cranking for a medium grind, depending on the beans and your pace. It is slower than an electric grinder, but the ritual is part of the appeal.

Can I grind espresso-fine?

Technically yes, but ceramic burrs are slower at very fine settings and the grind may not be perfectly uniform. This grinder is better suited to French press, pour-over, or moka, medium to medium-fine.

How do I adjust the grind size?

Turn the adjusting nut at the top of the grinder, clockwise for finer, counterclockwise for coarser. Adjust in small increments and test a batch before committing.

Does the drawer leak grounds?

Occasionally a few fine particles escape around the drawer edges, especially if the grind is very fine. Keep a small cloth or tray underneath if you are grinding directly over a clean counter.

Is the pine base durable?

Pine is softer than hardwoods like walnut or oak, so it dents and scratches more easily. The patina is part of the charm, it ages visibly, like a well-used cutting board.
