The bottomless portafilter is how baristas read their grind. No spout, no hiding. Channeling shows up the moment it happens. A 58mm universal fit, a solid wood handle, and the accessories that make every shot cleaner. The trainer for the home espresso machine.

The Verona Bottomless Portafilter is a 58mm E61-compatible portafilter with a solid wood handle in rosewood or beech. The naked basket is 304 stainless steel on a precision-machined alloy frame. It arrives as a complete 4-piece set in a magnetic gift box: the portafilter, a dosing funnel, a spare double-wall basket, and a basket retaining spring.

No spout, no secrets.

What's in the box

A full upgrade kit, not just a portafilter. Everything packs into a magnetic gift box, ready to give or to keep.

  • Bottomless portafilter: 58mm, solid wood handle, 304 stainless steel naked basket on a machined alloy frame.
  • Dosing funnel: Drops over the basket rim so grounds land in the basket, not on the counter. Cleaner dosing, less waste.
  • Spare double-wall basket: A pressurized basket for pre-ground coffee or a more forgiving shot while you dial in your grind.
  • Basket retaining spring: Holds the basket firmly in the portafilter so it never drops during a knock-out.

Care & maintenance

Stainless steel and wood both want gentle care. Rinse after every shot, wipe the handle, never soak.

  • Rinse immediately: Warm water through the basket after each use. Coffee oils oxidize fast and turn rancid. A quick rinse keeps the next shot tasting clean.
  • Backflush weekly: Use a blind basket and espresso machine cleaner once a week to push oils out of the group head and the basket threads.
  • Wood handle care: Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Once every few months, rub a drop of food-grade mineral oil into the wood to keep it from drying out.
  • Never soak: The wood absorbs water and swells. Rinse the basket, wipe the handle, dry both separately.
  • Check the basket rim: Dents and dings in the rim prevent a tight seal. If the portafilter leaks, the rim is probably bent. A light file smooths small burrs.

Frequently asked

What is a bottomless portafilter?

A bottomless (or naked) portafilter removes the spout. The basket sits exposed, so you watch the extraction happen in real time. If the puck is uneven or the grind is off, you see it: channeling, spurting, uneven flow.

What comes in the set?

Four pieces in a magnetic gift box: the bottomless portafilter with its solid wood handle, a dosing funnel that keeps grounds in the basket, a spare double-wall basket for pre-ground coffee, and a retaining spring that locks the basket in place.

Which wood should I pick, rosewood or beech?

Rosewood is dense, dark, and slightly heavier. Beech is lighter in color and weight, with a fine, even grain. Both are smooth, durable, and age well with oil.

Will this fit my espresso machine?

It fits 58mm E61 group heads, the most common size for prosumer and commercial machines. Breville Barista, Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic, and most Rocket, Profitec, or ECM models use this size.

Why use a bottomless portafilter instead of a spouted one?

The bottomless design shows you what is happening inside the puck. Spouted portafilters hide channeling, uneven extraction, and other problems until the cup tastes wrong.

Is it harder to use than a regular portafilter?

It is more honest, not harder. If your grind, dose, or tamp is inconsistent, a bottomless portafilter shows it. A spouted one hides it until the cup is already poured.
