The Kona Workshop Grinder is a manual coffee grinder with a wood body and a ceramic conical burr. No motor, no noise, no plastic taste. Just fresh grounds, cup after cup, in two warm wood finishes: brown and beige.

Why grind by hand

Pre-ground coffee starts going stale within minutes. Grinding fresh, right before you brew, is the single biggest upgrade most home setups are missing.

  • Ceramic burr, even grounds: A conical ceramic burr crushes beans to a consistent size instead of shredding them like a blade. Even grounds mean even extraction and a cleaner cup.
  • Cool and quiet: Hand grinding generates almost no heat, so the beans keep their aromatic oils. And there is no motor screaming at 6am, just the soft sound of the crank.
  • Rust-free and odorless: Ceramic will not rust and holds no metallic smell, so every batch tastes like coffee and nothing else.
  • Takes it anywhere: No cord, no batteries. Pack it for the cabin, the campsite or the office and grind fresh wherever you land.

Care & maintenance

A wood body lasts for years when you keep it dry. Moisture is the only real enemy.

  • Brush, do not soak: Use a dry brush to clear grounds from the burr. Wipe the wood body with a barely damp cloth, then dry it right away. Standing water warps wood over time.
  • Deep clean monthly: Lift out the burr, brush it thoroughly and wipe with a dry cloth. If coffee oils build up, use a damp cloth on the metal parts only, then dry fully before reassembly.
  • Oil the wood yearly: Rub a drop of food-grade mineral oil into the body to keep it from drying out. Let it absorb overnight, then buff off the excess.
  • Store with the drawer cracked open: Leave the collection drawer slightly open between uses to air out any trapped moisture.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to grind one serving?

Around 60 to 90 seconds for a single cup at a medium grind. Coarser grinds move faster, finer grinds take a little longer. A minute of cranking, and your coffee is ready to brew fresh.

Why a ceramic burr instead of a blade?

A ceramic conical burr crushes beans to an even size, while a blade chops them unevenly. Even grounds extract evenly, which means a cleaner, more balanced cup. Ceramic also stays cool, will not rust and carries no metallic odor.

What grind settings does it handle?

Coarse for French press through to medium-fine for pour-over and moka pot. It covers the everyday manual brewing methods well. For true espresso-fine grinds, a dedicated espresso grinder is the better tool.

Is it easy to disassemble and clean?

Yes. The burr assembly lifts out without tools and the drawer slides free from the bottom, so you can reach every surface with a brush in under a minute.

Does it need electricity or batteries?

No. It is fully manual, so it works anywhere with zero power. That also makes it quiet enough to grind without waking the house and easy to pack for travel.
