Care & maintenance

Zinc alloy and wood both want gentle care. Rinse after every shot, wipe the handle, never soak.

  • Rinse immediately: Warm water through the basket after each use. Coffee oils oxidize fast and turn rancid. A quick rinse keeps the next shot tasting clean.
  • Backflush weekly: Use a blind basket and espresso machine cleaner once a week to push oils out of the group head and the basket threads.
  • Wood handle care: Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Once every few months, rub a drop of food-grade mineral oil into the wood to keep it from drying out.
  • Never soak: The wood absorbs water and swells. Rinse the basket, wipe the handle, dry both separately.
  • Check the basket rim: Dents and dings in the rim prevent a tight seal. If the portafilter leaks, the rim is probably bent. A light file smooths small burrs.

Frequently asked

What is a bottomless portafilter?

A bottomless (or naked) portafilter removes the spout. The basket sits exposed, so you watch the extraction happen in real time. If the puck is uneven or the grind is off, you see it, channeling, spurting, uneven flow.

Which wood should I pick, rosewood or beech?

Rosewood is dense, dark, and slightly heavier. Beech is lighter in color and weight, with a fine, even grain. Both are smooth, durable, and age well with oil.

Will this fit my espresso machine?

It fits 2.5 in E61 group heads, the most common size for prosumer and commercial machines. Breville Barista, Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic, and most Rocket, Profitec, or ECM models use this size.

Why use a bottomless portafilter instead of a spouted one?

The bottomless design shows you what is happening inside the puck. Spouted portafilters hide channeling, uneven extraction, and other problems until the cup tastes wrong.

Is it harder to use than a regular portafilter?

It is more honest, not harder. If your grind, dose, or tamp is inconsistent, a bottomless portafilter shows it. A spouted one hides it until the cup is already poured.
